Is House of Black Cat Magic a rescue?
Our rescue partner is Binx’s Home for Black Cats: their mission is to spread the magic of black cats and foster a community that loves and protects them through foster, rehabilitation, and adoption of black cat and kittens. You can learn more about them on their website:
House of Black Cat Magic is NOT a rescue. We do not intake cats, provide medical care, or process adoption applications. If you are interested in adopting a cat, needing to surrender a stray cat, or have questions about veterinary care or records for a cat you recently adopted- please contact our rescue partner at (828)633-3080.
What if I want to meet a cat before I submit an adoption application?
You are welcome to come to the cat lounge during normal operating hours and visit the cats in the cat lounge before applying to adopt. Please be aware though, that only pre-approved adopters can access the cat longe for free and that we only have 12 of Binx’s adoptable cats at any given time. So you will be paying to enter the cat lounge and you will only be able to meet the panthers at our location.
Binx’s has many more adoptable cats in individual foster homes that they can schedule a meet-and-greet with upon approval. So in order to meet other cats in the rescue and get into the lounge free of charge, it is in your best interest to go ahead and submit an application before visiting with the cats. You DO NOT have to know which cat you want to submit an application and you ARE NOT committed to adopting once your application is approved.
You can submit your application here.
How much are the adoption fees?
Senior Panthers: $75
Adult Panthers: $95
Young Cats/ Kittens: $125
Adopt two panthers for 10% off the combined adoption fees!
How do I know if these cats are healthy?
All of our panthers are up-to-date on vaccinations, dewormed, received flea treatment, spayed/ neutered, combo tested for FelV/FIV, and microchipped. Any known health issues will be discussed with potential adopters prior to committing to adopt and adopters will receive a copy of their new kitty’s veterinary records. We do still highly encourage new adopters to set up an initial visit with their veterinarian to get their panther established as a patient.
Do you have any kittens in the cat lounge?
All of the cats in the cat lounge are ages 6 months and above. We use the lounge as a way to highlight Binx’s adult, senior, and special needs cats that need loving homes as much as the kittens! So while Binx’s may have kittens available for adoption, we do not house them here in the cat lounge. If you’re interested in available kittens, please check Binx’s Home for Black Cats’ website for a list of adoptable kittens and submit an adoption application to meet some of them.
Please also note that Binx’s Home for Black Cats has a two kitten policy. If you do not currently have a young kitten or cat in the home and want to adopt a kitten, you will be required to adopt two. If you currently have a kitten or a young, playful cat, you may adopt a single kitten.
What is a “bonded pair” and why can’t I adopt just one kitten?
A “bonded pair” of cats/ kittens is a pair of kittens that are dependent on one another’s presence to thrive in the home. They are often siblings from the same litter but they can also be cats that spent a majority of their lives together or even cats that just naturally gravitated toward one another when they met and are now inseparable. If separating two kittens causes observed distress in one or both cats, they’re considered bonded. Bonded kittens will often be side-by-side, one never seen without the other, sleep, play, & eat together. Bonded pairs are NEVER ADOPTED SEPARATELY so if you fall for a kitten in a bonded pair, you’re required to adopt both kittens.
Please also note that Binx’s Home for Black Cats has a two kitten policy across the board, even for kittens that do not have a bonded friend or sibling. If you do not currently have a young kitten or cat in the home and want to adopt a kitten, you will be required to adopt two. If you currently have a kitten or a young, playful cat, you may absolutely adopt a single kitten.
The reason for this policy is because young kittens need to be properly socialized with other cats throughout those important developmental stages of kittenhood! Kittens that are adopted out as single cats often develop behavioral issues like biting too hard, clawing too deep, attacking feet and ankles, climbing curtains, etc. All of those things might be fun when they’re a tiny kitten getting the zoomies, but once they get older and those bites are way too deep or they’re destroying your home, it’s not so cute anymore. As a result, what was an adorable singleton kitten at adoption is now an adult cat with behavioral problems getting surrendered back to the shelter (or worse).
By implementing a two kitten policy we have been able to significantly lower the amount of cats returned to our rescue. And yes, sometimes we may get a kitten in that has trauma with other cats or was raised in a home with dogs, that may be the exception to that rule, but for the most part kittens need other cats to teach them how to properly interact with the world around them. Kittens/ cats that are at least a year old may be adopted by themselves, but similarly to kittens, while most adults might be fine in a single-cat household, some adult cats are extremely playful and need another cat in the home with them. For those adults, we may also require another cat in the home to ensure that their adoption goes smoothly and is successful longterm.
If you’re interested in available kittens, please check Binx’s Home for Black Cats’ website for a list of adoptable kittens and submit an adoption application to meet some of them.
What do I need to adopt?
You must be 18+. You must get pre-approved by filling out an application online (see info above). Incomplete applications will be declined. We do not do "same day adoptions”, instead, adopters will schedule a date and time to pick up their familiars with our partner rescue upon pre-approval. We HIGHLY SUGGEST submitting an adoption application BEFORE visiting the cat lounge. Pre-approved adopters not only gain entry to the lounge for FREE but they can also take home a kitty same-day.
Please note: Applying does not guarantee that the specific kitty you're interested in will still be available when your application is complete. We encourage pre-approval prior to visiting to make the process smoother if you're ready to adopt your familiar!
I’ve been pre-approved, now what?
Our rescue partner, Binx’s Home for Black Cats, will be in touch following the approval of your application to schedule a day to pick up your kitty or meet the cats they think would fit your home best. Bring a cat carrier just in case, you’ll pay your adoption fee on your phone, and you’ll be on your way with your new family member!
Not sure of which cat you’re interested in yet and want to just visit the cat lounge? That works too! Make sure to let us know upon arrival that you’re a pre-approved adopter to gain free access to the lounge.
Please note: House of Black Cat Magic employees DO NOT process adoption applications. Any questions regarding adoption application decisions should be directed to our rescue partner, Binx’s Home for Black Cats.
What all does my new house panther need?
Typical cat supplies like a litter box, litter, cat food, food and water bowls, toys, scratching posts, and a cat tree are all needed. Our cats are fed Purina One Cat Chow and Fancy Feast, because cats get most of their moisture from their diet, it’s important to feed a mixture of dry and wet food. You can choose to continue feeding the same diet or you can transition them to a new brand of food slowly, to avoid indigestion. This information is also available in the adoption packets sent home with each kitty.
